| 1 | 1836 - Family lives with Pierre and Marquerite Lux per 1836 census | Family: F842
|
| 2 | Around 1880 the children of Martin and Marianna changed the spelling of their names to BEST Cemetery plot record for Peter, Martin, Michael M. and Charles A. lists two un-identified Martin's - dates of death: October 8, 1864 and June 5 1865. I have no Martin's with those death dates in my list. Am wondering if they might be infants of Martin and Marianne Haberkorn Berst? | Family: F108

| 3 | as reported by Glen Atwell (AtwellGRP@aol.com): Marriage at St. Mary's documents shows Michael Berst of "Brizels, Alsace" also from Glen Atwell: Witnesses: Peter Berst and Martin Berst mixed marriage, bride non-Catholic | Family: F114

| 4 | Did not live together after 1862 per petition for divorce Divorce judgment dated June 15, 1868 states: "And it is further ordered and adjudged that it shall be lawful for the said complainant to marry again in the same manner as though the said defendant was actually dead, but it shall not be lawful for the said defendant to marry again until the said complainant is actually dead." Frey and Katherine, therefore, we probably not married. | Family: F967

| 5 | For Henry Berst - yes we knew that he was listed in 1920 Chicago with the "H" woman that was listed as a wife. In 1930 he's in California alone. His death certificate from LA county, California says divorced from Margaret Fillinger, his first wife that he had children with & that we come from. Mom said family rumor was he, nicely put, was a "ladies man." My Aunt JoAnne told us that he married again, possibly more than once. So no surprise there. That could account for the 1914 marriage Mary found for an Anna M. Parkinson not matching the 1920 census of wife listed "H". Anna Parkinson being born in 1876 in Toronto and the "H" woman in 1920 Chicago being born in 1872 in Illinois. They most probably are different women. The sketchy name on 1920 census pushes me to thinking they may not even be legally married. Now, Henry Berst left the family when my Grandfather was still in high school, very young man actually. Grandfather ( Harry John Berst ) did not finish H.S. but always claimed he graduated from Lafayette High School. Years ago when I started this - I spoke with the man in City Hall Bflo. that took care of school records (since retired) and he said straight out that Harry never actually graduated. Don't know how far he got but we always knew that because Henry P. Berst left (wife Margaret Berst nee Fillinger took him to court but we can't access those records 'til 2012) my Grandfather Harry J. Berst had to help support his mother and little sister Myrtle. Harry J.'s WW1 Draft card basically claims them as dependants too. They also seemed to be in closer contact with Margaret Berst nee Fillinger's sisters and family. Henry only had 4 brother's but Margaret had sister's she kept close too. Frank Anthony Berst & wife Anna M. Massman (Henry Peters' parents) both died in 1904, Henry's brother Adolph moved to PA. The other 2 boys - John and George both stayed in Bflo. This running story is one of the reason's I have not passed info. on. It's just so much and I never hunted down any other marriage record for Henry Peter Berst so have had no documentation/proof to share. Just rumors and the "H" woman. Then you get to Harry John Berst ( my grandfather ) and he marries, has daughter, wife dies (we have her obit too - just days after Aunt JoAnn was born). He goes for a few years before he remarries my grandmother Leola Benz and they take JoAnn permanently, then slowly work on 2 more girls. (one being my mom) Once again family was more closely in contact with the wife's side (Benz) than Berst. Harry died back in 1960's. Harry's little sister Myrtle (only sibling) was apparently in & out of the psychiatric hospital too. She always shows up in census but I figure Margaret Berst nee Fillinger (the mom) may have listed her even if Myrtle was in hospital. We have a photo of Henry leaning on the fence of Buffalo Psychiatric Hospital making a funny face. Cute huh? but that was like him, he was loud, social and always laughing. My Mother remembers going to hospital as a young girl with her Dad Harry, when he visited his sister. Mom was not allowed past lobby area...great detail information from her about that beautiful place. Once that place shut it's doors, Myrtle was moved to Gowanda, died in 1980's there. Aunt JoAnn and Uncle Teddy visited her and I think Grandma Leola Berst nee Benz kept in touch too. Drama, drama, drama. But I love it. During my research - finding out that Myrtle's father was a Hatter gave us a little peace of mind, took the sharp edges off "crazy" genes in family. ; ) The term "Mad Hatter" exists because it is what happened to many of them from the mercury they used. Mom said as a girl they would break open thermometers and play with that stuff. Hatter's had vats of the stuff that they used for soaking. Can just see Myrtle having her own supply of the stuff to play with. Just Henry P. Berst the hatter coming home from working with that stuff and picking up, holding, kissing, little growing child is enough to cause serious problems. If she visited her daddy at work and was exposed to it there and or had her own stuff - well forget it. What I know of Myrtle's problems is identical to what happens to a person from mercury. Now there's a situation when family should be able to access a relatives psych files. All of this is why our Berst family knowledge is so poor and disconnected compared to the Benz side. I worry too that back in the mid 1800's when the problems with St. Louis occurred, and George Martin, Eva and their other children transferred to St. Michael's that family rifts happened. But then Peter was the executor of Joseph's will in 1875 so such a document gives me hope that they remained close. Brendon | Family: F793
